The engine warning light is flashing
A flashing light must be taken more seriously, particularly when the engine is running unevenly, the car is shaking or there is a significant loss of power. This may indicate an active fault capable of causing further damage.
Can you continue driving with the engine warning light on?
The decision depends on the overall situation. Before setting off again, check in particular:
- whether the light is steady or flashing;
- whether a red warning light or a message instructing you to stop is also displayed;
- whether the engine lacks power or is running unevenly;
- whether vibrations, smoke, an unusual smell or noise have appeared;
- whether the engine temperature is normal;
- whether the vehicle responds normally to acceleration and braking.

The light has gone out: is the problem resolved?
Not necessarily. Some faults are intermittent: the light may disappear when the condition is no longer present even though the underlying cause remains. The stored information may help explain what happened.
If the vehicle experienced a loss of power, vibrations or any other unusual behaviour, mention it even if the light is no longer visible at the time of the inspection.
